Description Gunnar Wagenknecht CLA 2004-04-19 00:51:21 EDT
Eclipse should show some feedback during startup until the workbench is
visible and usable. This could be done by having the Splash screen shwoing a
progress bar (like Windows XP boot screen) or blinking icons for several
startup states (like Gnome/KDE splash screen).

Optionally it would be nice to display some messages inside an area on the
splash screen to inform the user what is going on (eg.: "Reading opened
projects", "Restoring workbench", "Recovering unclean shutdown")

cc'ing Jeff as Core handles most of the startup

Splash handling (other than initiation and tear down) is all done in
eclipse.exe which lives in SWT land. There has been some discussion about
animating the splash but it is really quite complicated. We want the splash up
asap so doing it in the exe is the best place. It is actually quite some time
until we know the location of SWT (the first time we could do some graphics)
and there are issues managing the Display instance apparently.

A safe bet for this would be to defer to LATER. Worthwhile but not now.
