Description Kevin Sutter CLA 2020-09-14 12:42:10 EDT
Hi,
I use multiple email addresses with the various eclipse mailing lists. In the past, I used this type of email address (list-name-subscribe@eclipse.org) for subscribing my additional email addresses. I've been doing with all of the EE4J (Jakarta EE) mailing lists.

Recently, I hit an issue with using this approach with the WTP Dev mailing list. When I used this wtp-dev-subscribe@eclipse.org address to subscribe sutter@us.ibm.com, I received an error that this was not a valid email address. I thought maybe it was just because WTP was such an old project that maybe this alternate approach didn't work.

But, now we just created a new mailing list for the MicroProfile Working Group. When I tried subscribing from my sutter@us.ibm.com account, sending an email to microprofile-wg-subscribe@eclipse.org, this was also rejected. Since this is a brand new Working Group with a brand new mailing list, I would have expected this one to work.

If something has changed in the process, how can I get my alternate email address (sutter@us.ibm.com) subscribed to these Eclipse mailing lists?

Thanks, Kevin

I should point out that I have successfully registered for these mailing lists with my Eclipse-identified email address (kwsutter@gmail.com) via the normal web process:

Mailman provides almost no abuse prevention/protection for these aliases, and with the web UI for managing susbscriptions we decided to disable them.

We don't really expect people to use multiple email address when dealing with the Foundation so it's not supported. If you feel really strongly that this should be possible, please reopen and gather community support.

Yes, I will re-open. Your decision took functionality away that I was depending on. I had previously reached out to one of the eclipse webmasters (Matt) to find out how to subscribe with an alternate email address. The use of this list-name-subscribe@eclipse.org was the defined mechanism. Here's a copy of the note:

Hi Kevin,

Yes it is possible.  If you send an email to list-name-subscribe@eclipse.org from the 'extra' address that should kick off the subscription process.  If the list has restricted subscriptions you may need to get the list admin involved or they could simply reject your subscription request.

-Matt.

I need this functionality to do my job with the Eclipse Foundation. I have my coding email address at kwsutter at gmail.com, but much of my day-to-day activity with the mailing lists is done via my work email address at sutter at us.ibm.com.

I'm not clear why I would need to gather more community support for this issue when you took functionality away without any means of replacing it. Please provide a means of allowing to subscribe to mailing lists with multiple email addresses.

Thanks,
Kevin

FYI... I started with just the Jakarta EE Community last night and we are already receiving much support for the support of multiple email addresses. These responses are from key Jakarta EE members.
https://www.eclipse.org/lists/jakarta.ee-community/msg02488.html

David brings up a good point in his reply. The previous mechanism of allowing the use of the list-name-subscribe@eclipse.org address was a bandaid for a larger problem. Eclipse should allow the registration of multiple email addresses for all users. This may be a longer term goal that needs more time to figure out.

In the mean time, re-instating the previous mechanism sounds like a good workaround for now. If we need to create a new bug for the longer term solution, let me know.

Thanks!
Kevin

Bump... Any activity with this request. The community would like this type of capability restored. And, I'm sure I am missing some emails from the newly formed microprofile-wg mailing list. Thanks!

I am raising the priority of this request. I can not perform my job with the MicroProfile Working Group if I can only post to our mailing list via a single email address. I need the ability to register multiple email addresses with a mailing list restored. Or, provide an exception path for me to add my work email to the MP Working Group email list. Thank you!

As a one off I've manually added your work address to the Microprofile WG list. But as the only person requesting this or voicing support on this bug for this change is you, I've chosen to lower the priority to better reflect my perception of it's actual severity.

At this time I don't think there are any plans to support multiple email address per user account on Eclipse.org.

Since this is now a one-off process, how should I go about adding sutter@us.ibm.com to the cn4j-alliance mailing list?

https://accounts.eclipse.org/mailing-list/cn4j-alliance

I still say that multiple emails for mailing lists is a requirement. My "coding" responsibilities are different from my specification and committee participation. Thus, the need for multiple email addresses.

Thanks!

Hi, I am +1 for this change as well. I want to have the mailing lists in gmail. My Eclipse account points to my work mail.

Do I have to create a second Eclipse account for the mailing lists?

We can't do this. GDPR (and others) require a 1:1 relationship between user account and data. If a@a.com asks for all their data, we can't know thay they are registered to multiple email addresses with multiple accounts.
