Description Kasandra Darwin CLA 2018-01-11 09:53:57 EST
Hi Lucas and IP-Team,

We need to secure the trademark for the project name.

Name: Eclipse RedOx
Short name (id): tools.redox
Project proposal: https://projects.eclipse.org/proposals/eclipse-redox-eclipse-ide-rust

Lucas, if the name of your project has been used by you or your company, and/or if there are any Domain names associated with this project, please complete the Trademark and Domain Name Transfer Agreement [1] and send us a scanned copy.

IP-Team, please initiate a trademark search/transfer for RedOx.

Thanks,

Kasandra

The redOx name wasn't used nor registered as a trademark by us, however it appears to be trademarked by someone else: https://www.ic.gc.ca/app/opic-cipo/trdmrks/srch/viewTrademark?id=0525676&lang=eng&tab=reg. Will this require a name change?

Hi Lucas,

Is this part of your project?

https://github.com/redox-os/redox

Thanks,
Sharon
Comment 3 Lucas Bullen CLA 2018-01-23 12:42:50 EST
It is not
Comment 4 Sharon Macdonald CLA 2018-01-23 12:49:31 EST
The Eclipse Foundation values its Intellectual Property and respects the rights of other Intellectual Property holders. For this reason, a trademark search is performed prior to accepting any new project name. This safeguard is in place to protect all parties.

Unfortunately, our search results indicate a high risk of trademark infringement associated with using the proposed project name. As a result, we ask that you provide up to three new project names, in order of preference, and we will initiate a new search.

Thank you,
Sharon

Thank you for catching the previous issue. Please inform if any of the following names cause issues:
Eclipse Ride (Rust ide)
Eclipse Corrosion
Eclipse RLaD (Rust Language server and Development tools)

Turns out https://sourceforge.net/projects/redlandside/ has beat us to the name. Replacing this nomination with:
Eclipse iROn (R logo of Rust + O of Eclipse IDE logo)

FYI: There is a Rust web framework already named iron (https://github.com/iron/iron). Maybe do a search on crates.io for the names you are considering. But I think all names of metals in the periodic table are already taken (not even only corroding metals) in the Rust community ;)
Maybe research some names of alloys.

Hi Sharon,

Is there any progress or timeline on the validation of the proposed new names?

Hi Lucas,

I will get back to you this week with the results of the search.

Thanks,
Sharon

Hi Lucas,

We have performed our trademark search and the name Eclipse Corrosion has been approved.

Best of luck with your project.
