The color of the empty area is no longer white but it matches more closely the color impression of the 
striped background. However, this is still a workaround and does not solve the general problem that 
some backgrounds are not solid colors but patterns.

I don't think this is a regression.  However there is one other change that 
when there are no editors open, in 2.1 we drew a black rectangle around the 
editor area.  Now it is just a blank space.  Chris do you want to do anything 
here to indicate a "no editors open but there is space alloted for editors" 
state?
