An early move to 1.8 would help to use the java 8 constructs during implementation. Let us discuss on this bug if there are issues for moving to 1.8.

As mentioned in today's call, we must not make changes in the beta branch that aren't related to Java 9, i.e. changes between master and beta should be kept minimal.
