Assume that I have some source code that is currently unformatted. I want to format it and have a preview of exactly this code, how it looks with the new settings.

Currently, I have to open the formatter preferences, change some options, close the formatter preferences, format the code, reopen the formatter preferences, and so on.

It would be much easier if I could paste my existing code into the Preview text area, which would then replace the default text. When I change the formatting options, I can immediately see their effects in the preview window. Closing the formatter preferences would discard the custom text.
