Description Markus Knauer CLA 2015-04-25 06:43:54 EDT
From a projects point of view, it is desirable to name the executable of the Eclipse Installer 'oomph', and maybe this is something that affects Linux users only (the Windows download is a .exe file, on Mac OSX it looks like a .app directory after unpacking the archive - I cannot judge on those two systems).

But as a first-time user who wants to download Eclipse, and who doesn't know anything about the Oomph project, it is a big surprise that they need to execute something that's called 'oomph' when they just finished downloading an Eclipse Installer. I think, especially the first time users will have problems with that naming scheme. I would rename it to 'installer' (note that I always omit blanks in filenames because it is another source for potential problems).

What's your thinking about this?

I agree that this is a very sensible topic from both a user's perspective and a technical perspective. I think the launcher name must be the same on all platforms (to not blow up the build logic and to not confuse users with different names). I also think that after the build (and as part of the repackaging) the launcher cannot simply be renamed. We would like to call it something like "Eclipse[ -_]?Installer" on all platforms, but we found out that on Windows you just can't pin programs to the taskbar that contain the word "installer".

So what are concrete suggestions regarding a better executable name? Keep in mind that it should not contain the characters "installer" (see comment #1)...

Minor correction after playing with some options: On Windows 7 you just can't pin executables to the taskbar that contain "Install" or "Setup" in their name.

And what is the value of pinning the installer to the taskbar ... why would I want or need that ?
Comment 6 Eike Stepper CLA 2015-05-11 06:18:32 EDT
What about calling the executable just "eclipse(.exe)"?! That would also match the generated "eclipsec(.exe)" more nicely..

+1

Either that or something like "installer(.exe)"
Comment 8 Martin Oberhuber CLA 2015-05-30 02:41:30 EDT
I think anything that starts with "eclipse" would be good. Since then it matches the name of the downloaded archive (eclipse-installer) so it's more obvious what to launch rather than if the name is "oomph". For example:

- eclipse(.exe)
- eclipse-bootstrap(.exe)
- eclipse-downloader(.exe)
- eclipse-download-center(.exe)
- eclipse-installer(.exe)
- eclipse-install-center(.exe)
- eclipse-setup(.exe)

I didn't quite undestand from comment 2 why pinning to the taskbar would be desirable for the eclipse installer. So my personal preference would be calling it "eclipse-installer" which would also match the name in the splash screen.

I'll rename the launcher to "eclipse-installer"...
