Bug 46128

Summary: [OLE] Inline MS Word document ignores document modify password.
Product: [Eclipse Project] Platform Reporter: Alan Boxall <boxall>
Component: SWTAssignee: Platform-SWT-Inbox <platform-swt-inbox>
Status: CLOSED WONTFIX QA Contact: Felipe Heidrich <eclipse.felipe>
Severity: normal
Priority: P3 CC: snorthov

Target Milestone: ---
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows XP
Whiteboard: stalebug

Description Alan Boxall CLA 2003-11-05 15:32:31 EST
To reproduce:
1) create a MS Word document outside Eclipse
2) Add a modify password by opening the document and then adding a modify
password as follows: Tools->Options->Security and enter a password in
the "Password to modify" field. Save the document.
3) Import into a simple project in Eclipse.
3) Open document inside Eclipse and MS Word will open inside the edit window.
This is the default behaviour based on file associations.
4) Now make a change and save the document. Your changes are saved!

You should NOT have been able to save any changes because if you invoke MS
Word externally it will ask you for a password before letting you open the
document. Normally MS Word will open in read-only mode if you don't have a
password.

While it doesn't quite work right if I use the "Password to open..." option it
will stop me from opening the file (but it invokes MS Word externally first
before opening it inline)

PROBLEM: Eclipse has allowed me to save changes to a protected document
without requiring the password.

I noticed that the save icon in the MS Word toolbar is disabled but I AM ABLE
to save the document by using Eclipse commands.

This could be a serious problem for anyone (like myself) that stores MS Word
documents in CVS under Eclipse control. It allows someone that doesn't have
the password to submit changes.

Look like an OLE bug to me.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
