When I click on the advanced settings button, it takes me to a UI that I really don't want to see.
From the pov of someone installing an IDE, the only thing he/she cares about is the ability to tweak the network preferences which I think can be done in a much simpler way. Btw while are at simplifying the UI, simplifying the proxy settings dialog could be a big win!

There's a bug about finding a better icon for the "Switch to advanced mode" button but I can hardly imagine to take it away from those users who want it.

In the context of the "simple installer", what are the use cases that require the access to the advanced settings?
Comment 3 Eike Stepper CLA 2015-02-25 13:28:36 EST
That's not the point. The point is that there's just one executable with both modes and we don't want to require advanced users to launch this executable with a special command line argument. So there must be a way to switch between the modes. I think that a button with an expressive tooltip for the simple users is less distracting than that command line option for the advanced users. The actual icon could be more expressive but I think there's a dedicated bug for that.

I agree that it would be unfortunate to force advanced users to do that.

What surprises me here is that we are conflating the two use cases under one tool whereas the audience and their use cases are clearly different.
Some of this discussion could be greatly helped by creating two different downloads. One for the EPP Installer, the other that is the full blown Oomph experience.
This could hopefully provide an opportunity to reduce the number dependencies and thus reduce the download size from 44Mo.

Advanced settings button is the first button I click when installer starts.
IT should definitely be there, I don't care how the icon looks like.

Yes, that's what I heard from many of the (traditional) Oomph users. Personally I also appreciate the ability to quickly switch between the modes, as opposed to having different binaries.

Darn, I'm still hoping that someone has a great idea w.r.t. a better icon...

I tend to agree with Pascal that we are conflating two different use cases. However at a minimum I think we have a 'Settings' section for the simple mode and then a 'Switch to Advanced Mode'.

We're certainly conflating issues across multiple bugzillas. It seems to me we've already moved the to a menu, so this bugzilla is done. And it's a menu that's very small and for which we've already discussed removing the SSH settings in another bugzilla. Switching to advanced mode is certainly not a setting, and a submenu with two choices seems not a simplification to me. But that's just my opinion...
Comment 9 Eike Stepper CLA 2015-05-27 02:25:06 EDT
There is no icon anymore, so no need for a better one. The contents of the new menu are discussed in other bugzillas.
