Description
Wayne Beaton
I think there are some arguments for keeping the current name and its appearance: 1) The executable (like the other launcher artifacts) is called, e.g., "oomph.exe". 2) The task bar identifies it as the "Oomph Installer". 3) All sub shells have, as it should be, the product name (i.e., "Oomph Installer") as their title. 4) It's a generic installer for a broad and changing list of end-products from different catalogs, not just the Eclipse packages. 5) When users encounter problems with the installer they'll have to submit bugs against the Oomph project, not the Platform or just Eclipse. 6) It *is* the "Oomph Installer". We try to establish this as a recognizable brand and it's likely that people will associate the installer with Oomph anyway (sooner or later). (In reply to Eike Stepper from comment #1) > 6) It *is* the "Oomph Installer". We try to establish this as a recognizable > brand and it's likely that people will associate the installer with Oomph > anyway (sooner or later). Sorry, but of the 6 million people who download eclipse every release, do you really think they'll get to know this as the Oomph Installer and not the Eclipse Installer? I agree 100% with Doug and Wayne on this one. Most of the arguments above for keeping the project name in the UI seem to boil down to "because that's the way we've already implemented it" rather than "because that's what will make the most sense to the average user". > 6 million people who download eclipse every release
I don't expect that we will see 6 million Eclipse installs through Oomph. Perhaps, the main worry is the terminology used in the Oomph wizard in the EPP packages. That's a different spade entirely. For one, it's not an installer of any sort...
+1 for "Eclipse Installer" especially if Oomph is now the Eclipse installer solution. If people download "Eclipse" and get a "Oomph installer", that might scare them. Since Oomph will probably also make sense in other RCP applications and Eclipse-based IDE, I believe the best for adopters and user would be to say "Welcome to ${Platform.getProduct().getName()}, similarly to the "About" menu.
(In reply to Lars Vogel from comment #5) > +1 for "Eclipse Installer" Yes, we'll soon rework these title texts... It would help if we become more specific what strings we want to change. Here's a list of the strings I plan to change: - The title of the simple Installer (top of pages 1 and 2) will become "Eclipse Installer\nprovided by Oomph" (The Foundation designer wll provide us with an image similar to the one I'll attach in a minute). - The header of the Welcome Questionnaire will become "Welcome to Eclipse". Here's a list of other opportunities (constructive suggestions are welcome): - The names of the installer downloads (currently oomph-extractor-win32.exe oomph-extractor-win64.exe oomph-installer-linux32.zip oomph-installer-linux64.zip oomph-installer-mac64.tar.gz) - The name of the installer executable/ini (currently oomph(.exe) oomph.ini) - The task bar label (currently Oomph Installer) - The preference page(s) (currently Oomph | Setup) There may be some more places (I like to comapre it to "Mylyn", except that Mylyn is not in all packages)... Draft of a new title image for the simple installer
(In reply to Eike Stepper from comment #9) > Created attachment 250772 [details] > Draft of a new title image for the simple installer Looks cool and IMHO it is a good combination of the Eclipse and the Oomph brand. +1 for this. As we may be interested in using Oomph welcome question in JBoss Developer Studio, we have the impression that ability to follow product branding is very important. So reusing Product name and icon would be the best for adopters. I changed the Welcome Questionnaire title to "Welcome to Eclipse": http://git.eclipse.org/c/oomph/org.eclipse.oomph.git/commit/?id=827035459e96b4a676f3803ff2c33daa6fa095bf I've renamed "Oomph Installer" to "Eclipse Installer" everywhere except in the images (splash and simple installer page logo): http://git.eclipse.org/c/oomph/org.eclipse.oomph.git/commit/?id=edb9859e32510b47a0fb4baebb21b81868f7568f Wayne, the only thing missing is the new images, or, more exactly, the text in them (with the correct Eclipse logo font). When do you think is your designer done with that? I've adjusted the splash: http://git.eclipse.org/c/oomph/org.eclipse.oomph.git/commit/?id=90ee5a543bf0689fba6056d373b4e69bb8b84835 Together with my previous changes inthis context and the new look and feel (see bug 466264) I consider this bugzilla resolved. |
