By chance I was looking at the "edit account page" 

https://dev.eclipse.org/site_login/myaccount.php

and noticed there was a place to enter github email id, 
I tried to add (just) it, but was told "page was incomplete". 

Apparently I HAVE to _change_ my password at the same time I add github id. 

That seems unnecessary.
