Description Benjamin Cabé CLA 2014-02-28 05:51:21 EST
The incubation egg uses the old logo, it would be great if it could be updated to use the new visual identity.

Comment 1 Wayne Beaton CLA 2014-03-04 13:52:24 EST
I wouldn't mind something that's wider than it is tall, and a little more subtle.
Comment 2 Benjamin Cabé CLA 2014-04-21 11:48:58 EDT
I like that one :) http://eclipsehowl.wordpress.com/2014/04/21/happy-easter-with-egglipse

Wonder if 1/ others like it 2/ we could actually create a complete incubator logo out of it (I guess we just want to add "INCUBATOR" somewhere?)

Eclipse logo: Eclipse marble morphed to egg

Sure. See attached SVG. :-)
Comment 4 Wayne Beaton CLA 2014-04-22 09:44:56 EDT
I'll admit that I'm a little tired of the egg.

I'm thinking of something more mundane, like the new logo with the word "incubating" underneath.

"Mundane" sounds boring. How about that (see attachement)?

Maybe I should have used the words "lower profile" or "not an egg".

I love it! If only...
Comment 7 Holger Voormann CLA 2014-04-25 05:11:45 EDT
Even if Wikimedia (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/meta/4/48/Incubator_logo.png) and Apache (http://incubator.apache.org/images/apache-incubator-logo.png) use an egg as symbol for the incubator, too, I also do not like the egg because "incubator" will be associated with an egg but an egg will not necessarily be associated with "incubator".

I would prefer a symbol that will be associated with the controlled/protected starting/beginning phase of a project:

a) growing seed, sapling (maybe with an hand that holds it): similar to http://innovation.london.edu/userfiles/Images/incubator-logo.png or http://oasisincsanctuary.com/resources/Logo/Oasis_INC/4.Oasis%20Logo%20-%20incubator.jpg
   PRO: visualization of growth/development

b) launching rocket: similar to http://www.learnquebec.ca/export/sites/learn/en/content/mels/goal/images/Incubator_logo.jpg or http://www.goshen.org/content_th_big/PAGE38_LaunchPad_Logo.jpg
PRO: fits in well with the existing Eclipse logo

Also good; I like the idea of a rocket on the launchpad. That might encourage projects to move out of incubation a little quicker (i.e. get off the launch pad).

How about a rocket swooping in front of the logo?

We probably need the word "incubating" in there somewhere...

FWIW, I don't get the rocket analogy to incubation? I can see the seedling analogy. What about a heat lamp shining on the eclipse sphere with the word incubation.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

I will take a pass at this tomorrow! What format is needed for the graphic, file type, dpi, etc?

Thank you!

Hello all! We are now working on the incubator graphic with the designers, but could someone please let me know what formats are required? File type, dpi, etc? Should make this process more quick and efficient if we have all the required specifications before the designing begins.

Thanks!

This image should be a transparent png.

The container in which the image will be in is 190px wide so the image doesn't need to be bigger than this. And the containers are most often 100px high so I think if the image could be around 190px X 100px that would be great.

If we could get the original file (psd or ai) that would be great. If we need to make small changes it will be easier this way.

Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks!

Having an svg version of the logo would also be great. Eventually we might display incubation status in the feature/plugin dialog of the eclipse info somewhen in the future. Then we would need other icon formats which could easily be generated from svg.

Eclipse Incubator Design Ideas

Please find attached the first round of design concepts for the Eclipse Incubator logo.

I'm fond of the 2nd option, it's modern, unique and creative. It's also different from what our competitors are doing. I.e. Apache: Egg with logo - http://incubator.apache.org/

Please provide your feedback, and let me know if you'd like to have any changes made.

Hi Kat/Matt,

Thanks for getting started on this! My favorites are #1 and #4.

I also think that #2 does not match our current look and feel.
Comment 28 Eric Poirier CLA 2017-06-20 09:45:20 EDT
Hi Kat,

I agree with Chris, I think #1 is so far the best option.

We often make use of FontAwesome for icons and this option is more inlined with their styles and ours as well.

It would also be interesting to see how it looks in purple instead of Orange. This logo will be used on pages like projects.eclipse.org and it already uses a lot of orange.

Also I think it would be good to see how the logos (not only #1) in a webpage (for example: projects.eclipse.org)

Thanks!
Comment 29 Ian Skerrett CLA 2017-06-20 13:47:53 EDT
FWIW, my preference is #4. I think it is clean, simple and similar to the existing logo so people will know what it means.
Comment 30 Katharine Hirsch CLA 2017-06-21 17:32:40 EDT
Thanks for the feedback!

I will make a few modifications to the designs, in particular a #1 variation in purple. Wayne would like to schedule a meeting next week to discuss the options and direction we want to move in.

More details to follow.

Cheers,

Kat

Wayne, should we schedule a meeting with Stephanie to discuss the current state of this new design?

We should also discuss what we need to do to get this finalized.

My smug response notwithstanding, I believe that since this is a derivative of the Eclipse Foundation logo, we should get formal approval from the EMO(ED). Let Mike decide whether or not we need board approval.

I'll send a note to license@eclipse.org to make it official.

Hello,

First, I love the new incubation logo. Nice work.

I just spotted, there is a least one place where the new incubation logo is not used.

It's ok for the project page https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/technology.lsp4e but not for search results : https://projects.eclipse.org/?combine=lsp4e

I'm not sure where the source code of the website is available to propose a gerrit patch.
