In Orion 5.0 you can press Ctrl+O to quickly switch the Side Panel to show the outline view, and focus the search field.

This is good, but usually I just want to show the outline for a moment, then get back to editing. It would be nice if the 2nd time you pressed Ctrl+O, the Side Panel switched back to its previous view mode, and keyboard focus returned to the editor (or whatever element that originally had focus before the first press of Ctrl+O).

This is the default behaviour in 7.0. Rather than replace the nav panel, the outline opens a slide out from the left which is closed with Ctrl-O
