Description Christopher Guindon CLA 2013-11-11 10:08:27 EST
From my inbox:

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jee.php , the top google result for "eclipse java ee", has a very outdated link.
The "Download the Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" link points to
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/europa/winter/eclipse-jee-europa-winter-win32.zip

Europa was released in 2007. I suspect that page should either be updated, or removed from indexing by googlebot.

---

Should we remove this page or update it?

I'd rather redirect it rather than give up the plum placement in Google.

Maybe just redirect it to the JEE download?

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-developers/keplersr1

We should probably assume that with this change the prominence on Google will drop.

Alternatively, we can try to update the page.

Note that there are other similar "moreinfo" pages that are equally out of date.

e.g. http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/java.php

If we update the page, the new version will just get stale again (over time).

How about we invite the package maintainers to create and maintain their own page (if they choose). Package maintainers have committer access to EPP resources, so they should be able to create an maintain a page there that we can just link to.

Or maybe we can assemble something in the PMI.

Or maybe these pages belong in the future /ide site that's being discussed.

In any case, I think that it should be the package maintainers providing content.

All of these pages either need to be deprecated, redirected, or updated:

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/java.php
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jee.php
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/compare.php
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/c.php
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/rcp.php
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/classic.php

I think we are safe to delete this one. The latest compare page is here:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/compare.php?release=kepler

In the event that there are still links out there, let's set up a redirect.

I've updated the jee page by reducing the content to a minimal timeless-ish description. Frankly, however, I don't feel that this is the right solution.

I'm inclined to just redirect jee.php to http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-developers/keplersr1 and all the other pages to their corresponding download.

Is there a way that we can redirect to the most recent version? (so that we don't have to worry about this redirect getting stale?)

We should then encourage package developers to provide a more detailed package description. That's just part of an XML file, right?

If package providers want to provide a more detailed webpage, then they can just insert a link in to the description. Or we can provide a means of specifying a link in the XML file. WDYT?

The only think I can think of is the campaign manager but this would require us to update the links after a release.

The downloads links come from a xml in writable/community. We could write a redirect script with that information.

One of the main Eclipse information pages is pointing everyone to a very old version of Eclipse.

This is the page:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/java.php

This causes a lot of confusion.

AFAICT, this page isn't referenced from within our site, which likely means that it's reachable from search engines or external links.

I recommend that we redirect all of these pages to /ide

i.e. replace the content with:

<?php
header("Location: /ide");
?>

Or we can set up redirects.

Or should we redirect to /downloads ?

AFAICT, none of these pages are referenced by any pages maintained by the EF.
