If you successfully search for a file, it is put into the editor but the dialog remains

I cannot reproduce this on Mac or Windows. Ctrl+Shift+F followed by enter opens the file on a separate page if focus is in the input field or in the same page if the focus is in the list. In both cases, the dialog closes. 

Please give more details.

I reproduced the problem today using latest Chrome on Windows. Can't reproduce using Firefox. The problems seems to happen rather seldom. I was in project org.eclipse.orion.marketplace, file style.css, looking for projectEditor.js in Orion client. Jump from one to another using the FFN and it should occur at some point.
