With the continued convention debate over tab versus space indentation, the
result can often be a medley of both styles.

For the developer that cares, a visible whitespace feature akin to the 'set
list' feature in Vim would allow manual corrections.  The best implementation
I've seen of this is in the text-editor for Windows called TextPad.

I propose that spaces are represented by a middle dot (like the HTML &middot;),
tabs with a right arrow (&rarr; or the symbol from the TAB key cap) and the end
of line marked with a paragraph symbol (&para;).

Having thought about this a little more, I think that only the tab characters 
need by switchable to visible, i.e. 'visible tabs'.  One could then assume that 
any other whitespace is a space character and the display would be less crowded.
