This is a tracking bug capturing my thoughts on how we could clean up the explorers and treetable.  

The basic idea currently is that we have a low level "widget-y" thing, which is "treetable.js" and then we have a bunch of renderers and models built on top of it that we call "explorers."

The treetable is fairly well defined from an API point of view but also limited.  The explorer layer needs to turned into a credible API, and the various extensions need to be refactored for better consumability.  More specific bugs will be attached to this bug.
