I know there's bug #68684 that asks to remove the MRU editor tabs visibility policy in Eclipse.
I also know there was bug #344029 asking to restore it in e4, since it's missing compared to Eclipse 3.x. But the resolution of bug #344029 simply implemented a way to support this at theme level.

But IMHO this is not just a "style" preference, but actually a usability issue.
It's a pain for me to work in Eclipse 4.2.1 because the MRU policy of editor tabs visibility is missing: since I don't have a wide screen and I always end up with dozen editors open, I must continuously jump to the ">>" list of open editors simply to go from one open file to the other and then back and forth. And to fix this, I must change theme, to use the "classic" theme... That is, I must change theme because of a missing core feature. It's hardly acceptable.

Couldn't an option in Eclipse preferences be the way to make all people happy once and for all?
