Description Wayne Beaton CLA 2012-07-25 10:40:37 EDT
The draggable "install" link is very cool and useful, but it needs to be more prominent/obvious on the page.

e.g. http://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/maven-integration-eclipse

Is it worth a tab of its own?

Is it enough to just make the icon bigger?

Can we add the icon to the toolbar?
Comment 1 Nobody - feel free to take it CLA 2012-07-25 10:46:39 EDT
+1 that it is hardly noticeable.

Personally I'd like to see it in the toolbar.
Comment 2 Marcel Bruch CLA 2012-07-25 11:03:40 EDT
+1 for toolbar (with the huge mouse-hover that explains how to use this icon)

That drag-and-install button needs to be huge -- it's a really neat feature.

Furthermore, that button's hover text says "Indigo", as does the embed text:

I agree, but i think the problem is bigger:
it is not clear what different options you have to install a feature in Eclipse.

IMHO the detail pages need to be simplified.

To clarify a bit more:

- You have multi-level tabpages (the tab "view" contains another tabview with tabs "Details", "Metrics", "Errors")
- There is very little visual hierarchy in the page.

I think restructuring the page will make a bigger difference than only looking at the install button.

A Restructured Solution Page

In my previous comment i talked about restructuring the whole page.
Because sometimes images speak louder than words i created a mock-up showingwhat i had in mind.

Note that i am not a graphic designer, and that there is much room for improvement, but it is easier for me to show some idea's about a redesign than to explain them.

A Restructured Solution Page with search + markets

I am at a stage now where I am doing some front-end work, so this bug comes at a perfect time.(In reply to comment #5)

I really like the layout of this mockup but my main concern right now is that the "Search" & "Market" blocks are missing.

If we bring them back on this page the whole dynamic of the page will change since we wont have the same space for content.

I did a really quick mockup of what I suggest we could do.

The first part of my previous comment is missing. Here is what I was trying to
say...

For the past few weeks I've been working on updating marketplace to drupal7.

I am at a stage now where I am doing some front-end work, so this bug comes at
a perfect time.

Solution page for marketplace on D7

I did some work yesterday on the new marketplace website. The page still need some love but I've attach a screenshot of how it's going to look like.

I plan to give out a URL for testing the new marketplace very soon.
Comment 11 Nathan Gervais CLA 2012-07-27 10:35:12 EDT
Looking great! The page is really taking shape. After seeing the search block in the left nav I think it works much better than across the top of each page. (not on every page though)

I think any time you can make the content of the page cleaner its usually for the better.

Lets not forget the title of the bug however, we need a new Install button as well.

I'm excited to see Ian's comments.

I know. I left them out because i wanted to focus on answering two questions:
* What does this solution provide
* How can i get it into Eclipse

I felt adding them would distract again.

This looks like a good starting point and is already a big difference with the current page.

Right now i feel like the "how to install" box does not stand out enough.

I would move the "more like this" block back to the left, under the search box, to create extra space for the "How to install" box.

Then i would change the style of the "How to install box" to make it popup more.
Maybe make the install button bigger, center it in the box and add some whitespace around it.
Comment 13 Ian Skerrett CLA 2012-08-02 14:21:53 EDT
I agree we need to make the install button more obvious. This mock-up works well for listings that are reasonable short. However, for listings that are very long or have embedded html tables, things start to break. I think we need to take a closer look at the overall look at this page and how it fits all the listings.

Chris, is working on migrating the site to Drupal 7. This needs to get done before we can take on making changes to the site. I am hoping we finish the Drupal 7 migration by end of August, so we should be able to get to this in September.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

I am closing this bug. I don't think this is an issue now with the new solstice theme.
