It looks like the root of the problem is:

 git checkout --force v20120723-0230
     [exec] error: pathspec 'v20120723-0230' did not match any file(s) known to git.

The cloned git repository for orion client was in a weird state. It was missing the latest tags. I deleted the repository, which causes PDE build to fetch a fresh one, and that seems to be running fine.

Caused by repository corruption in bug 385895.
