I connected to freenode, then did some chatting and then did /list on the main tab in the view. This went on scrolling until the workbench stopped responding and eventually lost the UI. I had to kill the process manually to stop it completely but I guess anything could have happened. 

I suspect that we need to provide some max buffer for the output window.

I believe that this view was originally implemented by Remy Suen.  You/Wim should probably notify him on the mailing list about this/these issues with the chat view (in org.eclipse.ecf.presence.ui I *think*)...as he is probably in the best position to debug.

If the UI hung then it's probably best to get a thread dump and see what the JVM was doing at the time.

It is quite easy to get the dump. Sign on to freenode and type /list on the main screen (not in a channel).
