The summary says it all. At least on Mac OS X eclipse crashes on startup because
it tries to write the file .metadata into the eclipse-home-folder. The
eclipse-folder, however, will be most likely not writeable by the user. You
should instead use the proper location of application-data for the OS running
Eclipse.
That would be "%HOME%\Application Data\Eclipse" for Win NT/2K/XP and
"~/Library/Application Support/Eclipse" for Mac OS X.

I don't know if this problem exists on Windows, too, since I did not try Eclipse
on Windows yet.
