Description Susan McCourt CLA 2011-12-09 16:17:35 EST
in bug 366245 we were talking about nav icon clutter. Decided it's worth its own topic.

Breaking down the clutter:
- checkbox is our current selection model so we need that icon unless we implement something different. But note how gmail uses such a lightweight box, we are using the browser's. That is on our icon list for the graphic designer for 0.4
- we need an icon for the "local" menu. (a gear?)
- it's not clear that the one remaining top level command icon (favorite) is important enough to live there. If we decide that the action is not common enough to warrant being outside of the menu, then I would suggest moving the "local menu" icon to the right of the name link. With columns of multiple icons to line up, this has looked really weird when I've tried it, but if it's a single "gear" type icon, it would probably look fine to the right of the name without lining up vertically with all others.

here is what I'm running in my workspace:
- no tree
- favorites moved to menu
- gear menu instead of dropdown arrow
- gear menu moved to right of filename.

Comments?

Of course the checkbox icon needs to be better, and in tree mode we need a good looking twistie.

Anton mentioned getting rid of the header and I think that's a great idea.
We had it so that one would know there were "Actions" hidden in that hover column. Now that the actions aren't hover-triggered, we don't need it.

re: header...it is a convenient place to click for "sort by" but I wonder if that metaphor is used on the web.

I find the icons we currently show for image files looks cluttered. If the images happen to be icons it looks fine, but if they are large images you just see this tiny blob that doesn't tell you much. I was wondering if it could instead show a larger image thumbnail on hover or something (yes this doesn't work on a touch screen).

I released some changes (but I'm not done yet) that do the following:

- we style the checkboxes to be less heavyweight (I will have the graphic artists do real ones, this is just my quickie, but it's already better)
- the twisties are slightly larger to make them easier to hit
- the arrow menu is styled to use the gear menu and the hover styling cleaned up a bit (gear icon will be made nicer by graphic artists)
- the gear menu is moved to the right of the name in the navigator (no dedicated actions column)
- removed folder icon (since the twistie lets you know it's a folder)
- replaced the "yellow stylized" file icon with the standard eclipse file icon. This is really in preparation for bug 366265 where we hope to have different icons for different content types
- removed header
- I will play with menu position relative to the gear in bug 366447

Would like feedback...

there is a "twistie/column" dance that happens when you open a folder. I'll figure that one out. We also need more space around the twistie. In the "open" position it butts up against the file name

fixed these, and added some margin around the left side of checkbox. Also shrunk the gear icon a bit.

had a quick review with Linda.
Replaced the gear icon with a "menu" icon that is more the color of the links so that it blends better. We also got rid of the opacity hover effect.

I have requests in for more stylized checkboxes and twisties in bug 364399.

So I'm going to close this bug and folks can open new bugs if they want to play further with the nav look.
