There have been number of questions on the forum that boiled down to users placing spring config into /META-INF/spring for web apps.  Spring DM extender picks up those files and tries to create AppContext causing issues.

This is kind of documented in Programmer Guide:

It is in a bit of a obscure place.  Click on the link and look for Note in "Accessing the Service and Types from the WAR" section.  It is one of the things that we will have to move to an FAQ section.
