By accident I stumbled accross org.eclipse.dltk.ui.formatter.internal.WhitespaceCharacterPainter which is a clone of (an older version of) org.eclipse.jface.text.WhitespaceCharacterPainter.

That's right, I removed the clone and use the origin directly.
