Provide a simple way to install a set of bundles, just using the JARs, without having to set up feature patches, etc. .

Often, the user already has the bundles available, and just wants to add them to their existing install now. This scenario was trivial without p2 (just put the bundles into the plugins folder), but now it's a pain, and we can't give people a good answer to questions like bug 357127 comment 16.

The UI could be File > Import... > Install > Bundles, which lets me pick and choose bundles from anywhere on the filesystem. The implementation would do whatever is necessary to properly install these plug-ins (e.g. create a feature patch).

What about piggybacking off the "File -> Export -> Install into host" and allow the user to add additional bundles that aren't necessarily in their workspace?

Sounds like a good implementation strategy (reuse that code), but the cited menu path doesn't really fit the UI. A user would never look for an Install operation under 'File > Export > Deployable plug-ins and fragments' if all he wants is to patch his install.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
