Description DJ Houghton CLA 2011-10-06 15:46:58 EDT
Eclipse EGit - 1.2.0.201110050721
Eclipse SDK - 4.2.0.I20111004-2000

Recently I wanted to work on a maintenance branch for an Eclipse project, so this is what I did:
- cloned the Eclipse repo
- said I wanted to work from master before the clone
- after the clone in the Git Repo view right-click on the repo and say Switch To... -> Other...
- at this point I chose the remote R3_7_maintenance branch (it isn't listed locally)

Doing this operation doesn't seem to make a local copy of the branch to work in. Going to the command-line and typing:
  git branch
told me that I wasn't in a branch.

I'm pretty sure this was the pattern that I followed in earlier workspaces to work in branches.

To work around this I went to the command-line and typed:
   git checkout R3_7_maintenance
and it created the local copy for me and switched me to it.

Maybe the UI could assist newcomers better here

Let's look at this in bug 341679.
