Description Susan McCourt CLA 2011-10-04 12:45:45 EDT
some day we will want to look at device specific layouts (css3 media queries).
This bug captures ideas for what might be different on a small device.

- alternate banner with just the breadcrumb (and ability to dismiss it)
- ability to dismiss footer

Changing the name of this bug to "mobile friendly" rather than "device specific" layouts. I think there are already layout improvements we've discussed that would help mobile, but also would improve usability on bigger screens. I'm adding those as blocking bugs:

bug 347058 - removing left hand favorites pane and providing popup
bug 359621 - flattening clones view

There are likely some device-specific things we want to do, too, but I think it would be useful to have this bug track ideas that help usability in general, where the pain is especially great on a smaller screen.

Another device-specific idea:
we could make decisions about text vs. icons in the toolbar based on device width.

As part of exploring bug 366245 (keeping the tree, discussion of usability of tree on mobile), I added some device specific rules for the navigator checkboxes and twisties. When on an machine with an ipad-sized screen (or smaller, 1024 pixels or less), we now pad the checkbox and twistie icons with more hittable breathing room. It is now much easier to check/uncheck boxes and also hit the twisties. Note I didn't puff up the icons themselves (we could do this if we wanted to), I just made it more hittable via CSS padding. I found it MUCH easier to navigate and select in the tree now on an iPad without zooming in.

I've done all I'm doing for M2 on this one.
Keeping it open because we may have some mobile specific things to figure out in bug 360986 during RC1. Also we want to make sure the fix for bug 347058 (coming after M2) plays well on an ipad.

let's gut check in RC2 how we are doing now on iPad

test in RC3 and doc what we did to improve things.

I find that we could use some more media specific spacing for things like primary nav links and the user button. They are hard to hit without zooming in.

I think we should take a look at device specific horizontal spacing *after* we've done bug 371136 so that we could style our whole "horizontal list" presentation to be device specific.

The doc for improvements was added to the last N&N, should be picked up for 0.4 final N&N.

We should look at this in the context of skinning.
