We may want to add additional columns such as location , modified date in the flat view. This will make the file name the same as in the tree view without losing path info.
More importantly, you can sort on these columns.

I think location (and ability to sort by it) is important as a way of "filtering out" search results you don't care about.  

Ideally such a solution should be in the generic navigator (users will expect this ability everywhere).

By location, what  I really meant is the path of the file.
Eclipse shows file name in flat list as "fileName - path", while in Orion I really wanted to show the path part in another column.

I added the location column in flat view , with c7b1ea5576d64ba7ffb6091411a9d20d2a8cb06b.
I am still not closing this bug because  I would like a sorter on the column.

Server already supports sort by name or location now.
In M2, we will need a sorter UI .

I have a temporary solution in the option now just to switch between sort by name or path.Bug 365450 addresses the better approach.
