In my direct edit feature, I override stretchFieldToFitText() to return "true". The size of the direct-editing box is mostly accurate: it expands and shrinks according the text size. However, if the text is removed, the direct-editing text cell jumps to a pre-fixed width which is much wider than what's needed.
