Description Denis Roy CLA 2011-09-27 09:10:44 EDT
On this page: http://eclipse.org/m2e/download/

The Update Sites section has a link to a 404 page:
Update Sites
m2e release build repository
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/m2e/releases

We know that URL should be used within Eclipse, but some of your users do not. I suggest you:

a) remove the link
b) add a line of text that explicitly states the URL should be used within Eclipse.

Thanks

I suggest you bring this to the attention of webmaster@eclipse.org ;-)

Seriously, though, as I explained in https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=343564#c3 , it seems odd that download.eclipse.org renders update sites as 404 (or 404-like?) page and all projects are expected to workaround this.

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 343564 ***

Regardless of who is responsible for fixing the larger problem, there is still the more immediate problem of users who need to obtain m2e.

I received this note in the emo inbox this morning:

--
I was searching for the maven plugin on your site. Does it still exist? The site is still up, http://eclipse.org/m2e/. The download does not provide the install anymore?
--

I answered the user as follows:

--
M2E is included in the "Indigo" repository. You can obtain it by opening "Help > Install new software..." from within Eclipse, select "Indigo - http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo" as the repository, and find "m2e - Maven Integration for Eclipse" in the list.
--

I recommend that you add a few words on the download page to make it more obvious to users that they can obtain m2e directly from the simultaneous release repository.

I further recommend that you remove the a-tag from the update site URL, and provide more explicit directions for how to use it. When Bug 343564 gets worked out, you can put the a-tag back in.

what's "a-tag"?

The HTML hyperlink tag.

e.g. <a href=...>...</a>

Replaced <a /> tag with plain text. Also provided some info about using those links.
