I like the idea. When pointing the user to the marketplace, it should be noted tha the marketplace client is not part of the "Eclipse Classic" bundle (maybe that could be changed in the next release train? ^^) Instead of creating a new FAQ, I'd suggest improving the appropriate sections of the Eclipse Help (http://help.eclipse.org/indigo/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.platform.doc.user/tasks/tasks-129.htm or http://help.eclipse.org/indigo/topic/org.eclipse.platform.doc.user/tasks/tasks-124.htm) and linking to them prominently from the download page. There already is a link, but it's not very prominent and the title "Updating Eclipse" is a bit misleading. (By the way, the link still points to the Helios help) Maybe the packages should be referred to as "pre-configured downloads" with some additional text to say "Install additional packages from within Eclipse by visiting Help > Install New Software" (or better yet, through the Marketplace Client). Carsten: I'd wager that most developers with questions never make it to the Eclipse Help. Not to mention that there's no link to a FAQ here. Perhaps there should be a button "Need Help?" It should be possible for me to use MPC to select another EPP package and install the stuff from that package into my current Eclipse. (In reply to comment #3) > It should be possible for me to use MPC to select another EPP package and > install the stuff from that package into my current Eclipse. Using the MPC would address yet another recurring question on IRC: "which update site should I use to install X?" But I'm not sure how to surface the packages within the MPC. For example, searching for "PHP" brings up all sorts of seemingly unrelated tools. Perhaps a separate tab on the client? Another point: some users on IRC really hate services like the update manager or MPC as they want to do their downloads at work (or somewhere fast) and then install the packages at home. It might make sense to include links to free services to build composite installations (e.g., Yoxos OnDemand). This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie. I suspect this issue will be obsolete once the installer becomes the main download... I'm thinking that some of these bugs may be a part of the solution: * Bug 459905 Create a marketplace for Eclipse projects * Bug 461603 Add an "intro" item that opens MPC on the "Eclipse Projects" market * Bug 465439 Consider creating an MPC "Welcome" page I think that we still need a little something on the website. (In reply to Denis Roy from comment #7) > I suspect this issue will be obsolete once the installer becomes the main > download... I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is fixed based on the existence of the installer. Based on that, and the extended period of inactivity on this bug, I figure that we're done here. Feel free to correct me. |
