The Git UI should warn or even prevent creating a commit with blank user name/email. This can happen if you don't have default git settings in your profile, and it happened to me several times this week on various repositories (maybe it was because they were cloned with an old Orion client, or even with eGit). Since we offer nothing like git filter-branch for rewriting commits, your only option is to discard and recreate your work when this happens.

Fixing bug 350012 should help here.
Comment 2 Szymon Brandys CLA 2011-08-18 12:32:49 EDT
Right, it will help for repos cloned using our Orion Git client. We need to do this check anyway in case a repo is imported to Orion.
