There's a very useful but stale patch on bug 286963 that adds a command to mark similar incomings read. It would be nice to update it so it won't block the main thread, and commit it, as it's handy when doing planning.

My first patch on the bug 286963 was actually providing a proof of concept of this

Thank you for your request. It does not fall into the core scope of the project and due to time constraints we are unable to resolve it at the moment. The bug has been marked helpwanted though to indicate that we would be happy to support a community contribution to resolve it.

It might be a good idea to pop up a confirmation dialog saying which changes will be marked read.

Actually, I wonder if the simplest thing would be the most useful: just mark read any task whose state is INCOMING (not INCOMING_NEW) and which does not have any new comments. If I had that I would only want the ability to mark similar incomings read when someone posts the same comment on many tasks, which is a very rare occurrence. It seems like overkill though to have both, unless we had some fancy dialog for dealing with incomings. Thomas do you have any thoughts about this?

I agree almost entirely. Although adding or removing yourself from CC or owner should be exempt as well I would guess?

I think what you mean is, mark read any task whose state is INCOMING (not INCOMING_NEW), and which does not have any new comments, and where you have not been added to or removed from a person field. That makes sense to me.
