It seems that I cannot remove Mylyn from my Eclipse installation

It's part of that installation so I don't think you can. p2, please advise.

It looks like at least with the Java release Mylyn isn't a root IU so can't be removed.  If you're looking for a distro without Mylyn, it isn't included in Eclipse Classic.
