It would be great if there was a section for the Desktop Panel that allows simple notetaking. Maybe a File Selector to select a file (and remember it) and a small multiline textbox to show the content of the selected file and allow editing it directly in the Desktop Panel.

Something like Eclipse Notepad (http://eclipsenotepad.sourceforge.net/), just for the Desktop Panel.

Good idea. But the selector should not be a file selector, but a selector for information units within my workspace (listing all plaintext info-units).

To the lifecycle:
I'm not sure on which points in time the content will be saved. There are several possibilities:
* User driven (by a save button)
* Automatic (every time the user edits text)
* On closing the desktop panel

In addition I'd suggest adding a small toolbar with a redo/undo command.
