Description Eugen Paraschiv CLA 2011-05-26 16:41:54 EDT
Build Identifier: I20110524-1000

The standard add view button is missing. The only way to add a view now is via the Window - Show View - Other menu.

Reproducible: Always

Which button are you talking about? The fast view button in the lower left hand corner?

Yes. I could not find it in the current build.

Eric can correct me if I'm wrong, but that functionality has been removed in 4.x. All views must exist in a stack in the perspective, and that stack can be minimized to the trim.

Does this mean that a new view can only be added a perspective via the Window menu?
Is there a reason that the shortcut has been removed? And is there a difference if a view is added via the Window menu or via a shortcut?

From a UX perspective, I found it unintuitive to dig around in the menu just so that I could add a view quickly, so this could probably be improved. If there is indeed an architectural reason why a view cannot be added the same way it was added in 3.x, then perhaps another type of shortcut can be used instead.
Thank for the feedback.

There are short cuts to open most views, like (ALT+SHIFT+Q C -> Console). And if you don't need to know the specific shortcuts, ALT+SHIFT+Q Q -> Show View dialog, give you the entire list to choose from.

We would also consider other approaches.

Well, shortcuts are very useful tools for the power user, but the standard user will have a hard time remembering ALT+SHIFT+Q Q. So, a shortcut to get to that view dialog will likely be useful and improve the overall experience. What's more, Eclipse users are already familiarized to having that shortcut accessible there.

I guess you never noticed the different but buttons opened using the fast view button becomes fast views. Whereas the views opened via the 'Show View' submenu open up as regular views.

So yes, there is a difference.

Of course, that should have been "...but views opened...".
Comment 9 Eugen Paraschiv CLA 2011-05-30 07:55:35 EDT
I understand. So fast views have been removed from 4.x, which is fine, but there is still the issue of user experience. Even without fast views, a shortcut for a regular view should still be there to facilitate adding a view to an existing stack. This would simply be a easy and consistent way of adding views, without having to go into submenues and without thorny shortcuts. If if the underlying implementation has changed a bit (the view is no longer a fast view), the overall user experience should still be easy, meaning the process of adding a view should still be easily accessible via the shortcut.
Same note about a consistent experience for Eclipse users - the shortcut is there now and users are accustomed to having it there. If it's simply removed, and doing the same thing takes more effort, then this is something that can be improved.
Thanks for the quick feedback.

Eugen, try Ctrl-3...this will put the focus on the 'Search bar' where you can simply type the name of the view you want to open...

What would you think if there were a '+' button at the end of the tabs in a stack which, when clicked, would bring up an Open View type dialog? It's one of the things we've looked at but haven't decided on yet...

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
