From the git-log page, I tried to open a compare editor on a commit.  We get an error fetching the commit (see bug Bug 344051).

But an additional problem is that the error message is shown in the "title" area of the left and right compare panes rather than in the content area.  So the URL gets clipped and I have no way to see what happened.

In coding.html, we replace "Fetching..." with the error message, which is nice because then it can be as long as needs to be, and is easily copied an dpasted in to a bug report.
