Description Wayne Beaton CLA 2011-04-21 10:55:22 EDT
Some members of our community, especially newer members, may be confused by the apparently broken links to the update sites on the downloads page. I recommend either including a index page in the update sites, or adding some words above the links.

Maybe a link to the help might be useful as well.

FWIW, it might be nice to create a "website" component for these sorts of bugs.

As a side note, I wonder if download.eclipse.org should just show directory listings by default... to make things less confusing for all members of Eclipse community, not just m2e users ;-)

Maybe. But isn't it the case that the links are basically meaningless, anyway?

Let's say we turn on directory listings... somebody clicks the link and is given a directory listing. Then what?

Maybe not directory listings... My point is, currently all eclipse projects have to do something to make update sites less confusing for new(er) users. I think it would be nice if download.eclipse.org rendered update sites as something more cheerful than 404-File-not-Found by default. It would benefit all eclipse projects and you wouldn't need to chase all of us individually.

I agree.

The current 404 page does actually give some information about what might be wrong and suggests that maybe the link is for an update site (it even gives a link to the help documentation).

I'm not sure what more we can do.

Funnily enough I wrote something to generate a website from a p2 repository that has a layout similar to the Install Software page, I had planned to hook into the p2 import/export feature. Its not quite finished but I might get time over the weekend.

This was worked around by not using <a href=blah> in m2e download page... long time ago. I still believe this is a problem with eclipse.org download infra, but I am not fighting this battle.
