Description
Doug
Please provide the crash dump. If the browser widget crashes then it's most likely an SWT (or browser) issue. How do I provide a crash dump with Mac OS X? I don't see anything conspicuous in the workspace directory other than a java stack trace in .log that might be it (though I have a hard time believing that something caught in a stack trace would cause a process crash). AFAIK you'll get a dialog with the crash and if you click on 'Report Problem' you'll get another screen showing more data about the crash. I tried this with my Mac (10.6.7) and external monitor setup using the 3.7RC4 build. I'm unable to reproduce the reported problem. The javadoc tooltip shows up without any problem and moving the pointer over it lets me scroll it. Please attach the crash dump so that we can investigate this further. I haven't been using a two-monitor setup in quite a while. That should change again soon. There is a missing step in my reproduction settings. The crash is rare, but the problem with the tooltip disappearing is still there. I'll add the missing step in marked with asterisks: Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open up Eclipse on a second screen (I have mine maximized). 2. Edit a java file. 3. Move the pointer over a java method and wait for a tooltip to appear. 4. Move the pointer into the tooltip regtion. ** 5. Try to scroll the tooltip contents (must be larger than initial tooltip space) with two-finger scrolling on the MacBook track pad (or maybe the scroll wheel?) 6. The tooltip will unexpectedly disappear OR Eclipse will crash completely. I should be returning to a two-monitor setup again later this week and will continue regular development so I can report on this more later. Sorry I haven't been able to provide anything lately. I just set up a two-monitor system again with a new MacBook Pro, and the same problem is occurring. The tooltip behavior when the Eclipse workbench window is on the primary monitor: 1. Hover over a java symbol 2. Javadoc tooltip appears 3. Move pointer into the tooltip region 4. Tooltip gains focus and becomes scrollable The tooltip behavior when the Eclipse workbench window is on the secondary monitor: 1. Hover over a java symbol 2. Javadoc tooltip appears 3. Move pointer into the tooltip region 4. ** TOOLTIP CLOSES ** I don't think that the tooltip should close in the latter case. It is still possible, however, to use F2 to give the tooltip focus and work with it. I have not (yet) seen Eclipse crash as a result of the tooltip appearing in the second monitor. It is rare, but I will post again when I see it. At the very least, however, I think there is still a bug with the tooltip behavior when used in the second monitor. Doug, could you confirm what version of Eclipse you are using (4.1 or 3.7)? I want to check if the version field is accurate. Also, you can get a crash dump using the Console.app. There might be old logs in there. Lakshmi, please try to reproduce with 4.1. My Eclipse reports: Version: Helios Service Release 2 Build id: 20110218-0911 The hardware I was using when I first filed the bug no longer has a crash report for Eclipse unfortunately. I am using a new new hardware now (both macbook and monitor). I have been unable to reproduce a crash with the new hardware, but I have been trying. The only problem so far has been the disappearing tooltip when working with eclipse in the attached display (comment 6). I'll keep trying... The > only problem so far has been the disappearing tooltip when working with eclipse > in the attached display (comment 6). I'll keep trying... I have a similar setup. I tried to reproduce this with 4.1 and 3.6.2 builds but unable to see the problem, the tooltip doesn't disappear on the secondary monitor... Could you please try with a latest 3.7 build if possible and verify if this still happens for you? I think I figured out what the problem is. My MacOS display configuration has my secondary display ABOVE my primary MacBook display. In this configuration, the tooltip disappears. This is also the case if the secondary display is virtually BELOW the primary display OR if I place top edge of the virtual secondary display above the top edge of the primary display. If I change the configuration so that the secondary is to the left or right of the primary display AND the top edges are perfectly aligned, there is no problem. The problem still occurs with Indigo. Perhaps there is some trouble in dealing with y coordinates when operating a tooltip? Also, FWIW, debug popups don't seem have this problem. The javadoc tooltip disappears when hovered over it, but using F2 works fine. There is no crash though. I just upgraded to 4.2. Still seeing the tooltip disappear unexpected when Eclipse is on my second monitor (when it is not horizontally aligned with the first). Good news is that I haven't seen a crash because of this in ages. Maybe something was fixed in MacOS, or maybe something was fixed in Android tooling, which I typically use. Bug triaged, visit https://wiki.eclipse.org/SWT/Devel/Triage for more information. This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie. |
