Git permits us to capture the identity of the author of a contribution in addition to the committer information we track in CVS/SVN. We should be able to mine contribution information directly from this.

I have updated the http://wiki.eclipse.org/Development_Resources/Handling_Git_Contributions wiki page to explicitly state that we need to capture this information.
