It would be great to have egit packaged as a gitk/git-gui alternative.

This would be for scenarios where users and build/development environments are primary and egit is a tool to assist git usage.

This means that it should be possible to use egit without first defining a project and perhaps packaged as an Eclipse RCP standalone app.

Reproducible: Always

Have you seen GitEye by CollabNet?:

It's what you describe, they packaged EGit (plus some patches) and some other components into a stand-alone application.
