To avoid loosing the textual model a diagnosis/validation could be done before a diagram is actually saved.
If validation doesn't succeed show an error dialog with an internal error (since graphical editors shouldn't lead to inconsistent models).

Possible a kind of pre-commit hook in Graphiti would be a good idea. This should be investigated.
