This would provide a way to collapse when nothing interesting was found under an expanded node.

Here is a proof of concept patch that adds the - affordance.  There is still some work to do to make this smooth, but it looks like it will be a great feature.

Shawn, are you going to be able to finish this? Otherwise I would suggest to move it to 3.7.
