Description Malgorzata Janczarska CLA 2011-03-10 08:25:28 EST
The breadcrumb does not contain workspace root, so if user navigates to a folder in the workspace he desn't have a simple way back to the workspace root. User can click to "Navigator" link or to Orion logo, but it always triggers the page reload and is not intuitive. I think first position in breadcrumb should be the workspace root.

I removed the link with the word "root" because I felt like having it appear that way in the crumb was not intuitive, but you are the second person to want this feature back. I wonder if having a slash at the front would be enough of a target.

Has anyone seen other ideas?
github "sort of" has this issue. They prepend the username to their path breadcrumb. So if you are drilling into a repo you can click back on the user. This gives you the user page, which includes the list of all repos, so it's not exactly the same.

Page reload is a good point.

In "old" Eclipse a good word would be "workspace", because every Eclipse user would know what it means. How do we call "workspace" in Orion?

We've had this discussion several times, and I think the last time we did, we said that we weren't going to introduce the words "workspace" or "project" to the user. John did some work to revisit the workspace model (back in M2??) and honestly I've lost track of where we were.

We have a concept of Workspace in the Orion server, but I don't like the idea of introducing it in the client at this point without introducing all the related functionality (create/open/close/delete/whatever operations on workspaces).

My suggestion is/was that we have the label "Orion Navigator" in the breadcrumb when you are at the root level. Why not leave that label in the breadcrumb all the time, so that when you navigate into a project you see something like:

| Orion Navigator | John's Stuff / folder / etc

Clicking "Orion Navigator" in the breadcrumb would take you to the root (without page reload).

I like this idea.

I understand correctly that "John's Stuff" would be the name of your project? Not the name of your "workspace"?

Yes that is a project.

Note to self: as part of fixing this bug I'd like to make sure that the existing links to root ("Navigator" and the logo) use a hash after the name so that a page reload does not have to occur. This way, any buffered selections used in the Ctrl-C gesture can be retained so that the user can copy stuff to the root.

fixed.
