Please perform a checksum verification and see if your firewall is causing problems. Also please take a screenshot of the error dialog. Does the splash screen ever come up? Does it ever ask you to select a workspace?

it never asks about workspaces.. That is the problem :( plus, please dumb down what your trying to say.. what is checksum verification? plus, i don't think i've a firewall problem. and what is splash screen??

Can you provide the filename of the file that you downloaded with the Eclipse installation and the Windows version information? It's possible that you have the wrong eclipse kit for the version of Windows (are you trying to use a 64 bit version of Eclipse on a 32 bit windows system?)

eclipse-java-helios-win32-x86_64 - this is the file i've been trying to download. i use Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3 for OS, and the processor is Intel Core 2 Duo (thats 64 bits right?)

Yes, that seems right, however I think it also depends on the version of Java you have installed. Can you download the 32-bit version of Eclipse and see if your results are better?

I've tried.. but it is downloading only upto 8.4 MB. the download fails halfway, unlike with the 64 bit version.

There are many sites where you can download Eclipse, all of which can be found from eclipse.org.

With most probability, you are running a 64 bit Eclipse on a 32 bit OS or a 32 bit JVM.
Please download a 32 bit Eclipse and if the problem persists, please reopen this bug with more information.
