The Mylyn project is now top-level (bug 328383) but the news group is still tools.mylyn. Is it possible to rename it to mylyn?

Webmaster can't change newsgroup names. This is why you still see groups named eclipse.technology.equinox.

The only thing we can do is close up the old one and create a new one.

Since there is no simple transition it's seems better to me to keep it the way as is. Would seems disruptive to users using the current location change it. Mik, do you have a strong opinion on this?
