The Eclipse Search > Text > in Scope functionality starts a search for the active selection (eg Ctrl+Alt+G for "Search in Workspace"). Btu when the selection spans multiple lines, only the first line is searched. This is very unintuitive.

As a Workaround, the following works in Eclipse 3.6.1:

  1. Search > File... , enable the "Regular Expression" checkbox, cancel
  2. In an editor, make a multi-line selection
  3. Press Ctrl+H, Search
  --> Multi-line selection is searched (and may be replaced).

This proves that the multi-line search functionality is available in the Platform/Search framework. I cannot think of any logical reason why the same functionality shouldn't also be available for the immediate "Search Selection" action (Ctrl+Alt+G and related).

I quickly looked into this: while it is pretty clear and simple how to fix it in 'RetrieverAction', the solution is a bit more time consuming because the currently used methods from 'TextSearchQueryProvider' can no longer be used and need to replaced with the variant that takes a 'TextSearchInput'. 

Martin, let me know how important this is for you and whether you might have resources at your hand that could do this. I might have time during 3.7 but I can't guarantee it.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got
resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some
reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you
still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is
(for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
