Description Pascal Rapicault CLA 2011-02-11 09:43:02 EST
There will (of course) be a Simultaneous Release the on the fourth Wednesday of
June, 2012 ... but, what to call it? As is our tradition, we'll have community
involvement to help decide.

See bug 306864 for last year's discussion.

The rules and procedure for Indigo +1 will be similar:

The name will be roughly alphabetically; must be greater than "I" (but not too
much greater, to leave room for later names). Preference will be given to "J"
names, but no strict rule that others would not be considered.

Preference given to names that fit the "moon", "heavenly body gods", or
"scientists" themes we've had so far, but no strict rule.

This cross-project bugzilla entry will remain open to solicit names, until
March 7th.

Planning council will remove any they deem unsuitable for any reason (as
always, Planning Council has final responsibility for the name).

Following the gathering of the list of names in this bugzilla, a doodle-like
poll will be used to pick top choice. We may have a series of run-off polls,
voting until majority achieved (anyone know of a free, open voting site that
allows first, second, third choice? with "built in" runoff votes?)

The Final choice will be revealed for EclipseCon.

Here is a starting list gathered from Sonatype colleagues
    * Juno
    * Jupiter
    * Jubilate
    * Janus (Janus is the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, endings)

I have a feeling Juno will be popular with my fellow Canadians:

I like Janus and Juno.

How about Jura?

A space mission to Jupiter, highest Roman goddess and origin of 'June'.

Comment 10 Eric Cloninger CLA 2011-02-11 11:33:53 EST
-1 on Janus. Scatological references aside, I lost a lot of money on a Janus
Fund in the 0's. It will be hard getting through the release train without the
reminder that I could be sailing around the world right now, instead of
working.

In honor of our recently departed Marketing Goddess, who had a thing rabbits, I
nominate 'Jackalope'.

Comment 11 John Arthorne CLA 2011-02-11 11:34:25 EST
Just a reminder that you don't need to vote +1 for names in this bug. This bug is just gathering a list of possible names. Voting will come later. Arguments/reasons why a given name should or should not be considered are welcome input though.

Jackalope is a codename already used for Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Comment 14 Mike Kucera CLA 2011-02-11 13:52:36 EST
Jupiter seems somewhat appropriate considering that the moons of Jupiter were used to name past releases. Having said that I also like Juno.
Comment 15 Peter Nehrer CLA 2011-02-11 13:54:11 EST
Yes! That's what I meant, Juliet, not Juliette. My high school lit teacher wouldn't be impressed :-P

1. Jive
2. Joule / Joules (unit of energy. name of scientist - James Prescott Joule)

-- more --

3. Jupiter
4. Jones (Indiana)
5. J (single letter word. Eclipse - J)
6. Jay (in case you don't like single letter word. Rhymes with J in Jai Ho!)
Comment 18 Michel Parisien CLA 2011-02-13 10:09:14 EST
Jar? Jiffy? Jamiroquai?

Seriously though, +1 Juno. The first time I heard it, I thought it sounded perfect for a release name.
Comment 19 marcus.linke CLA 2011-02-14 04:27:27 EST
How about Jade?
Comment 20 Joerg Buchberger CLA 2011-02-14 04:41:12 EST
+1 for Juno

to me that seems like a great way to celebrate, that the Eclipse platform has been released on schedule in the last week of JUNE already the 7th year in a row

what I also like about it:
- short name
- easy to pronounce
- celestial body of our solar system
Comment 21 Markus Knauer CLA 2011-02-14 04:45:20 EST
Same opinion here... from all suggestions I think that Juno is the best.

+1 Juno
Comment 22 Ankur Sharma CLA 2011-02-14 04:56:07 EST
My $0.02 about Juno. Though its a name for mythological character, asteroid and a spacecraft. In recent time, its more known for a movie by the same name and people have both liberal and not-so-liberal views about it. However, if Eclipse community is good with it, so be it.
Comment 23 Laurent Goubet CLA 2011-02-14 05:00:28 EST
Juno is great to celebrate the seven years of releases on June.
Jupiter is great to celebrate the three first "named" releases of Eclipse (Callisto, Europa, Ganymede).

Difficult choice here, but my vote would surely go to one of those two if they're in the final choices.
Comment 24 Benjamin Cabé CLA 2011-02-14 11:32:13 EST
+1 for Juno

Lewis Caroll, the author and mathematician, wrote a poem featuring the 'Jabberwock' in one of his books about 'Alice in Wonderland'.

There is also a film about it by Monty Python. Unfortunately the Jabberwock is not a very nice creature :-)

So no points yet ;)

not really a fan of Juno
Al touch Juno is the Greek godess Hera and she is the godess of Jealousy

Junius (Latin for June just to show how awesome Eclipse is for doing this for 7
           years straight)

  Julie ( Moon of Uranus)

  Jarah ( Moon Deity, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarih)

I like the Jules (verne idea as well :))

I think Jupiter would be a nice name for E4, relating the other releases as minor orbits around it... :)

Is the ordering by +'s here?

Or, in light of the results so far: Shouldn't the choices get ordered randomly for each voter to avoid a bias in favor of the first item?

Since I prefer Juno, too, I like the way it's going - I just can't keep myself from asking dumb questions :-)
Comment 35 Trevor CLA 2011-03-16 08:49:23 EDT
I do not know if this matters but a quick google search for "eclipse juno" turns up a result that "Juno Eclipse" is a Star Wars character.
Comment 36 Wolfgang Werner CLA 2011-03-17 05:01:34 EDT
+1 for Juliet. "Hey, go check out Eclipse Juliet" sounds nice.
Comment 37 Pascal Rapicault CLA 2011-03-20 19:19:44 EDT
The vote is now closed and the name that got picked is Juno.
This name will still have to be vetted by the EMO.
