The designer does not release the connections to the database it uses.
I'll attach a report example.

This report contains a data set using a "Property Binding" request.
When I open this report with the designer, a database connexion is created.
When I make a preview (using Preview tab), two more connexions are created.
When I go back on Layout tab, database connexions are not released.
If I make an other preview, Birt create (again) two more connexion.

To check connexion, I used the follow sql statement: SELECT * FROM v$session WHERE username = 'A_BRUNET_V1'

Environnement :
- Birt Report Designer 2.6.1.v20100709a-9iF7A8FGLY4z0pxX3ORrsdrp6JXb
- Database : Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bi
- java version : 1.6.0_21
- Windows XP
